Elephant Butte Lake Fishing Report

Wednesday April 17, 2019

The Crappie are the best that they have been in 10 years or so!!

5 or 6 years ago you couldn’t find a crappie in Elephant Butte…..  Yesterday and today were the best Crappie bite that we have seen in many years…  it promises to be a great year for Crappie..

Now and for the next few weeks would be a good time to get a kid out that never has fished… My dad used to say….    “You raise a kid on concrete, he’ll never know big wood from brush”…

The Crappie have been found in the backs of coves on the East side and out on Long Point.   Live Fatheads and Shiners are the best ..  small plastics tossed against the bank and worked back to deeper water… A few folks told me that they had great luck finding grass and weeds on the bottom in 5 – 15 feet of water on the graph.. then dragging live Shiners or curly tailed jigs just above the weeds..

The weather turned bad today but the fish were biting into the early afternoon.. The best bite seems to be early morning ( not too early ) through mid day…

No reports of night fishing in the last few days… but you can bet that it will be excellent for  the next week or so…  Live Shiners under lights around any structure or around the Marinas..

If your bank fishin’,  around Rock Canyon or out on Long Point in the backs of coves would be the best.. Tossing curly tail jigs out or live bait under a bobber…  Don’t be afraid to venture to the rocks around the Dam and Damsite ..

Catfishin’ is still a little slow.. folks are catchin’ lots of smaller cats.. with a few nice 10 – 15 pounders showing up.. mainly at night, early mornings and late evenings..

The White Bass are very good trolling with white, yellow or chrome crankbaits.. Drift fishin’ with live Shiners..  No one has told me anything about jiggin’ yet…

Walleye are very good around both sides of Long Point.  The best action is around the flat areas as they transition into the rocks… Yellow or Chrome Walley Divers or curly tail jigs … 5 –  15 feet…

Tell mama that the fishin’ is too darn good to mess with a honey-do list..

come see us..

When tradin’ with folks… always remember…  ” you can shear a sheep it’s whole life… you’ll only skin em’ one time”…
